Basement Beginnings & Spring Prep on the Farm

It all begins with an idea.

It might still be chilly outside, but inside the farmhouse, the promise of spring is already sprouting!

This time of year is full of excitement and anticipation here at Water Dance Farm. While the ground outside is slowly waking up, our basement has officially transformed into a bustling seed-starting headquarters. Under rows of grow lights and the soft hum of fans, little green shoots are popping up — the very first signs of the season to come.

We’ve started trays of tomatoes, flowers, brassicas, herbs, and early greens — each tiny seed tucked in by hand, warmed by grow lights, and watered with care. These seedlings are the heartbeat of our farm's growing season, and it’s such a joy to watch them stretch toward the light day by day.

While the seedlings do their thing downstairs, we’re also hard at work getting the gardens and greenhouses ready. Here’s what we’ve been up to:

  • Turning beds and adding compost to give the soil a healthy boost before planting

  • Checking irrigation systems and making repairs where winter left its mark

  • Organizing tools and supplies so we’re ready to hit the ground running

  • Repairing greenhouse plastic and structures after a long Maine winter — patching, tightening, and replacing where needed

  • Prepping transplant trays so everything is ready when our basement babies graduate to the great outdoors

  • Getting help from our littlest farmhands, Kortez and Kodiak, who have been hard at work hauling small tools, inspecting worm piles, and occasionally turning the compost pile into a mud kitchen

There’s still mud, there’s still frost, and there’s definitely still a long list of chores — but this part of the year feels like a fresh breath. Every tray we plant and every weed we pull is a step closer to those lush, full gardens we’ve been dreaming of all winter long.

Thanks for following along as we dig into another growing season. We can’t wait to fill your tables and baskets with good things straight from this land we love. More updates coming soon — including some sneak peeks of our greenhouse progress and early spring greens!

Until then, here’s to warm lights, dirty hands, and hopeful hearts.

With love from the farm,
Aurore, Nick, Jen, and Kacey
